LUKE 9:49-50 RSV
John answered, “Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you.”
I may be guilty of this sometimes but we have a habit of taking sides. If something doesn’t meet a particular standard that we have set, we dismiss it without a second thought. This is the same opinion the disciples had of the man that they saw casting out demons. They didn’t consider him as one of them because he hadn’t gone through the “rigorous course” of following Jesus around or being “personally educated” on kingdom matters. In their eyes, the man had to have done things a specific way or else everything else he did was invalid.
Not so. Jesus had the foresight of looking at the world through a very distinct lense. If what he was doing was good then nothing else mattered. The man’s background didn’t matter. His education was irrelevant because what was most important was that he was HELPING people.
Looks can be deceiving. I know we live in a time when everyone has to watch their backs but Jesus hasn’t given us an attitude of fear but of courage. Have a good night everyone and stay encouraged.
